Internal platforms often fail for a simple reason: the platform team ships a capability, but the adopting team experiences a migration problem.

That gap is a product problem.

Why It Matters

If a platform is positioned only as an engineering standard, teams will compare it against their current workaround. The workaround may be messy, but it is known. The platform has to offer a clearer path, not just a better architecture diagram.

A Practical Model

Adoption improves when the platform answers four questions:

  1. What problem does this remove from my team?
  2. What is the first safe step?
  3. What support exists when the path breaks?
  4. What tradeoffs am I accepting by using this default?

Open Question

The useful question is not “How do we force adoption?” It is “What would make the platform feel like the safer path for the people doing the work?”
